Search volume is the number of times people search for a specific keyword per month on Google. To find it, you need access to a keyword research tool that pulls data from Google's search infrastructure or third-party databases tracking billions of queries. For ecommerce, search volume is essential because it tells you whether customers are actively looking for what you sell.
The challenge is that Google doesn't publish exact search volumes publicly. You must use Google Ads Keyword Planner, specialized SEO tools, or a long tail keyword finder to estimate demand. Each method has different accuracy levels, data sources, and use cases. This guide covers the fastest, most reliable ways to check search volume for your products.
Use Google Ads Keyword Planner for free data
Google Ads Keyword Planner remains the most direct source because it pulls from actual Google search data. You can access it free if you have a Google Ads account, even without active campaigns. The tool shows monthly search volume, competition level, and bid estimates for paid ads.
To use it, log into your Google Ads account, click on the Tools menu, select Keyword Planner, and choose "Discover new keywords." Enter a keyword related to your product, select your country and language, and the tool returns 100 to 200 keyword suggestions with monthly search volumes. A WooCommerce merchant selling winter boots, for example, would enter "winter boots" and see that the base term receives 110,000 monthly searches in the US, while "waterproof winter boots" gets 14,800 searches, a long tail variation with lower volume but higher intent.
The limitation is that Google rounds numbers to ranges (1,000 to 10,000 searches, not 3,247). For ecommerce, this vagueness can lead to content prioritization mistakes. Keyword Planner also prioritizes keywords tied to paid ad spending, so organic-only keywords may rank lower in suggestions.
Check specialized SEO tools for detailed metrics
Third-party tools like Semrush, Ahrefs, and SE Ranking offer granular search volume data alongside keyword difficulty scores and cost-per-click estimates. These platforms maintain their own keyword databases compiled from billions of historical searches and clickstream data.
Semrush's Keyword Research tool, for instance, displays search volume as specific numbers (18,200 searches rather than a range), historical trend data for the past 12 months, and SERP features breakdown. A Shopify store targeting "organic dog treats" can see that 8,200 people search this term monthly, with 33% of results showing product collection pages and 22% showing Google Shopping ads. This insight tells you the search intent is transactional.
How to find search volume for products · EcomRank
Most specialized tools charge $99 to $500 per month. Ahrefs reports 201 million keywords across 171 countries. Semrush covers 24 billion keywords. SE Ranking indexes 4.9 billion keywords with monthly updates. For ecommerce, the investment often pays for itself if you're managing multiple product categories. A 50-product DTC brand running paid ads alongside organic content benefits from this precision.
Look at Google Trends for seasonal patterns
Google Trends shows relative search interest over time but doesn't provide absolute search volumes. It's free and useful for understanding whether demand for a product spikes seasonally.
Enter your product keyword and select a date range (past year, past 5 years, or custom). Google Trends displays a line graph where 100 is peak popularity and 0 is minimal interest. For "holiday wreaths," you'll see a sharp spike every November through December, then a drop to near zero in summer. This tells you when to publish content, run campaigns, or stock inventory.
You can also compare multiple keywords on a single graph. Searching "running shoes" versus "trail running shoes" shows that general running shoes maintain steady interest year-round (around 65 relative interest), while trail running shoes spike during fall hiking season (up to 85 in October).
Google Trends data is indexed from Google Search, Google News, YouTube Search, and Google Shopping, making it representative of actual customer behavior. The tradeoff is that you get relative interest, not absolute monthly searches. Pair it with Keyword Planner or a specialized tool to convert the trend to real numbers.
Analyze competitor product pages and ranking data
When you know what competitors rank for, you can infer search volume by working backward from ranking positions and organic traffic. If a competitor's product page ranks in the top 3 for "rose gold smartwatch bands" and that page gets 2,400 monthly visitors, you can estimate the keyword's monthly search volume is higher (accounting for click-through rate loss to other positions).
Use Ahrefs Site Explorer or Semrush's Organic Research tool. Enter a competitor's domain, filter by a product category (e.g., "smartwatch band"), and export the keywords they rank for. Sort by search volume and position. A Shopify store owner selling phone cases can see that a competitor ranks #2 for "iPhone 15 case clear" with 12,100 monthly searches. This means that keyword is worth pursuing if your store also sells that case.
SEMrush and Ahrefs both charge, but they offer free trials (7 days with limited access). This method is especially useful for discovering product variations you hadn't considered. A competitor ranking for "iPhone 15 case waterproof" at 4,300 searches might reveal a product angle you hadn't targeted.
Cross-reference with search intent and keyword clustering
Search volume alone doesn't guarantee ROI. A keyword with 50,000 monthly searches might attract browsers, not buyers. Conversely, a keyword with 800 monthly searches might have 40% transactional intent.
Use keyword clustering to group related searches by intent. Group "how to choose winter boots" (informational) separately from "buy waterproof winter boots" (transactional). Your product detail page should target the transactional cluster; your blog should tackle the how-to questions.
Most specialized SEO tools include intent classification. Ahrefs marks keywords as Informational, Navigational, or Transactional. SE Ranking and Semrush do the same. A long tail keyword finder that clusters keywords by topical authority and search intent saves weeks of manual grouping.
For ecommerce, aim for keywords where 50% or more of top 10 results are product pages or collection pages. If eight of the top ten results are blog articles, that keyword's search volume is misleading; the actual product search volume is lower.
Monitor search volume trends over time
Search volume fluctuates. A keyword with 5,000 searches today might have 7,200 next year. Conversely, trends fade. Tracking volume changes month-over-month helps you double down on growing topics and pivot away from declining ones.
Set up rank tracking in Semrush, Ahrefs, or a dedicated tool like Rank Tracker. Add your target keywords and monitor their search volume trend. Over a 12-month period, you'll see whether a keyword is gaining traction, holding steady, or declining.
A DTC brand selling fitness equipment noticed "home treadmill" maintained 74,000 monthly searches in 2024 and 2025, then dropped to 68,000 in early 2026 as gym memberships increased post-pandemic. By monitoring the trend, they shifted content budget toward "compact treadmill for apartments" (growing from 12,000 to 18,500 searches over the same period).
Google Ads Keyword Planner doesn't show historical trends; you need a specialized tool for this. The investment in monthly tracking typically costs 10 to 50 dollars per month depending on the platform and keyword count.
Use structured data and topical mapping for AI Overview visibility
AI Overviews and Search Generative Experience results are changing how consumers encounter products. Google now generates answer summaries from top-ranking pages, reducing zero-click searches. To appear in these results, your product content needs topical authority and clear schema markup.
Schema markup (also called structured data) tells Google about your product: price, rating, availability, and reviews. Use Product schema, Review schema, and Aggregate Rating schema on product detail pages. This helps Google understand your page's intent and ranks it higher in both traditional organic results and AI Overviews.
Topical mapping means connecting related pages with internal linking through consistent anchor text. A page about "waterproof hiking boots" should link to related pages like "best winter boots for snow" and "boot care guides," all using relevant keywords as anchor text. This signals to Google that your site has topical authority, improving rankings for the entire cluster.
When topical mapping is done correctly with proper JSON-LD implementation, your pages are more likely to appear in AI Overview summaries, which now account for 8 to 25 percent of search traffic depending on the query type. For ecommerce, visibility in these summaries increases organic impressions.
Bring search volume data into your content strategy
Finding search volume is just the first step. You must map it to a content plan that prioritizes by volume, intent, and your current domain rating. A new Shopify store should start with long-tail keywords (1,000 to 5,000 monthly searches) because competition is lower. Established brands can chase keywords with 20,000+ searches.
Use your search volume data to estimate organic traffic potential. If a keyword has 12,500 monthly searches and you rank in position 4, expect roughly 3 to 5 percent click-through rate, or 375 to 625 monthly visitors. Scale this across your target keyword list to forecast total organic revenue.
Most SEO platforms including the long tail keyword finder automate this calculation, but understanding the math helps you negotiate budget. Showing leadership that "targeting 50 keywords with an average of 4,200 searches and 4.2 percent CTR at position 3-5 = 8,820 monthly organic visits" is more credible than "we need more content."

How is search volume measured?
Search volume is measured in monthly searches on Google and reported as an average across a 12-month period. Google Ads Keyword Planner displays ranges (1K-10K, 10K-100K). Specialized tools like Semrush and Ahrefs report exact numbers. The data comes from Google's internal search logs, which these third-party platforms estimate and model. Search volume includes all variations of a keyword (e.g., plural forms, typos) within Google's matching algorithm.
Is search volume monthly or daily?
Search volume is reported monthly, not daily. When you see "12,500 searches," that means an average of 12,500 searches per month over the past 12 months. Daily volume varies significantly. A keyword averaging 12,500 monthly searches might see 200 searches on a Tuesday and 600 on a Saturday. Seasonal keywords like "Christmas gifts" will have zero searches in March and 500+ daily searches in October and November.
Can I see search volume without paying?
Yes, Google Ads Keyword Planner is free if you have a Google Ads account. Google Trends is also free. Both have limitations: Keyword Planner rounds numbers to ranges, and Trends shows relative interest, not absolute volume. For exact numbers and detailed metrics like difficulty score and trend history, you need paid tools (Semrush, Ahrefs, SE Ranking start at $99 to $120 per month). Free trials are available from most platforms, giving you 7 to 14 days to test before committing.
How do I know if a search volume is accurate?
No search volume is 100 percent accurate. Google Ads Keyword Planner rounds numbers. Third-party tools model data based on clickstream and historical patterns, not direct Google logs. Accuracy improves when you cross-reference multiple sources. If Keyword Planner says 10K-100K and Semrush reports 34,200, the Semrush figure is more useful for planning but still an estimate. Track your actual rankings and organic traffic over time to calibrate; real data from your Google Search Console outweighs any estimate.
Should I target high-volume or low-volume keywords?
Both. High-volume keywords (10K+ monthly searches) are competitive but offer higher traffic potential. Low-volume keywords (under 2K monthly searches) are easier to rank for and often have higher conversion intent (e.g., "waterproof hiking boots size 12" versus "hiking boots"). A balanced strategy targets a mix: 30 percent high-volume, 50 percent mid-volume (3K-10K), and 20 percent long-tail low-volume keywords. Use search intent to guide allocation; prioritize transactional keywords at any volume over informational ones.
How does search volume relate to ranking difficulty?
Search volume and keyword difficulty are different metrics. A keyword with 50,000 monthly searches might have low difficulty if competitors haven't optimized for it yet. Conversely, a keyword with 2,000 monthly searches might have high difficulty if 30 domain authority 70+ sites already rank. Difficulty scores in tools like Semrush account for backlink profiles of top 10 results, not just search volume. Always check both metrics before deciding whether to pursue a keyword.
Can I use search volume to estimate revenue?
Roughly, yes. Multiply monthly search volume by your click-through rate (CTR) at your target ranking position, then by your conversion rate, then by average order value. Example: 12,500 searches × 4.5 percent CTR at position 3 × 2.8 percent conversion rate × $65 AOV = $2,046 estimated monthly revenue from that keyword. This breaks down for ultra-low-volume keywords and is unreliable for new sites without conversion history. Use it as a planning tool, not a guarantee.
Do I need a specialized tool or is Google Keyword Planner enough?
For solopreneurs and small shops running one to three product categories, Google Keyword Planner is sufficient. For larger ecommerce operations, a specialized tool pays for itself. You gain exact numbers, trend history, competitor keyword analysis, and intent classification, all of which reduce research time from hours to minutes. If you're managing 50+ keywords or multiple brands, the $120 to $400 monthly cost of a platform is justified by better decision-making.
