How to Do International SEO on Shopify: The No-Nonsense Method
·13 min read
International SEO on Shopify means optimizing your store to rank in search results across multiple countries and languages. Unlike local SEO, which targets a single region, international SEO requires you to signal to search engines that your content is relevant to buyers in specific geographic markets and languages. Shopify's built-in features handle much of the technical groundwork-hreflang tags, canonical URLs, XML sitemaps-but you need the right strategy to actually win organic impressions in each market.
Choose Your URL Structure for Each Market
The URL structure you select directly affects how search engines distribute authority across your international markets. Shopify supports three primary approaches: subfolders, subdomains, and top-level domains. Each has different implications for domain authority, crawl budget, and local relevance signals.
Subfolders (yourstore.com/fr/, yourstore.com/de/) share domain authority with your primary domain. Search engines treat them as part of the same site, so all the topical authority and link equity you build on your root domain flows to each subfolder. This is the lowest-friction option and works well if you operate 4 to 8 markets. Most Shopify stores use subfolders because they require no additional domain registration and Shopify's Markets feature automatically assigns hreflang tags to subfolder versions.
Subdomains (fr.yourstore.com, de.yourstore.com) are treated as separate properties by Google. Each subdomain builds its own domain rating over time. Use subdomains when you need operational or branding separation-for example, if a French franchise runs its own site independently. The tradeoff is slower domain authority accumulation in each market.
Top-level country domains (yourstore.fr, yourstore.de) send the strongest local relevance signal to search engines. If you want to dominate search in a single high-value market like Germany or France, a country-code top-level domain (ccTLD) makes sense. However, they're the most expensive option (domain registration plus DNS setup) and fragment your authority across multiple sites. Reserve this structure for markets where you plan to invest heavily in localized content and link building.
Build Topical Authority with Market-Specific Keyword Clusters
International SEO fails when you simply translate product pages and call it done. Search intent differs across markets. A buyer searching for "winter boots" in Canada has different needs than someone searching "stivali invernali" in Italy. You must research and target the actual keywords that buyers in each market use, then organize your content into topical authority clusters that demonstrate deep expertise to search engines.
Start with keyword research specific to each language and country. Tools like Semrush, Ahrefs, and Google Search Console reveal what searchers actually type in France versus Germany versus Japan. Identify 15 to 25 high-volume, low-difficulty keywords per market. Group them into semantic clusters. For example, in an outdoor apparel store, a cluster might include "waterproof hiking jacket," "best rain jacket for hiking," and "lightweight waterproof shell." This is keyword clustering.
Next, build a topical map. Assign each keyword cluster to a pillar page (a comprehensive collection page or category) and multiple supporting blog posts (cluster content). For a Shopify store selling outdoor gear, your French pillar page might be yourstore.com/fr/collections/hiking-gear, supported by blog posts about "best hiking boots for alpine terrain" and "how to choose a weather-resistant backpack." This topical mapping creates a semantic hub that search engines recognize as authoritative on a specific subject in a specific language.
Internal linking between cluster content and pillar pages signals topical relevance. Use descriptive anchor text: instead of "click here," write "learn about waterproof hiking jackets" when linking from a blog post back to the collection page. Shopify's built-in blogging tool supports anchor links. This internal linking structure, combined with schema markup on product detail pages and collection pages, amplifies your topical authority for each market's search engine.
Implement Structured Data and Schema Markup for Search Engines
Search engines increasingly rely on structured data to understand product information, pricing, availability, and ratings across markets. Structured data uses JSON-LD schema to tell Google and Bing exactly what you're selling, in what currency, and to which regions. Without it, a product page is just text to a search engine.
On every product detail page, add Product schema. Include the product name, description, image, price (in the local currency for each market), availability ("InStock" or "OutOfStock"), and rating if you have reviews. For a jacket sold in the German store at 89.99 EUR, the schema should specify currency: "EUR" and price: "89.99". This helps search engines display rich snippets-stars, price, availability-in search results, which increases click-through rate by 20 to 40%.
On collection pages, use CollectionPage schema. On blog posts targeting informational intent, apply Article schema with a headline, publication date, author, and description. Each of these signals helps search engines categorize your content and rank it for the right search intent in each market.
Shopify automatically generates basic product schema, but you should audit and enhance it. Use Google's Rich Results Test (search.google.com/test/rich-results) to validate your schema for each market's store version. Check that currency codes, language tags (hreflang), and canonical URLs are correct. Misconfigured schema costs ranking positions.
Manage Hreflang Tags and Canonical URLs Correctly
Hreflang tags are one of the most misunderstood elements of international SEO. An hreflang tag tells search engines, "This page is the English version of my content; here's the French version, and here's the German version." Without proper hreflang markup, Google may index the wrong language version in the wrong market, fragmenting your search visibility across versions.
Shopify's Markets feature automatically adds hreflang tags when you set up multi-language or multi-region stores using subfolders. If you're using yourstore.com/en/, yourstore.com/fr/, and yourstore.com/de/, Shopify's system generates hreflang annotations in the page header. However, if you're mixing custom domains, subdomains, or ccTLDs, you must manually verify hreflang in your site's HTML or via Google Search Console.
Correct hreflang syntax for a product page looks like this: if your English page is yourstore.com/en/products/jacket, your French page is yourstore.com/fr/products/jacket, and your German page is yourstore.com/de/products/jacket, each page should declare all three versions in its HTML head. The English page announces itself and points to the French and German versions; the French page does the same for its siblings. This bidirectional declaration prevents duplicate content penalties and ensures each market's version ranks in its own region.
Canonical tags work alongside hreflang. A canonical tag tells search engines, "This is the primary version of this page." On international stores, the canonical should point to itself, not the English version. Your French page's canonical should be yourstore.com/fr/products/jacket, not yourstore.com/en/products/jacket. If you incorrectly point all canonical tags to one language, Google will index only that version and ignore the others.
Check your hreflang and canonical setup quarterly. Use Google Search Console to inspect live URLs and verify that the correct language version is indexed in each market. Search for site:yourstore.com/fr/ to see how many French pages Google has indexed. If that number is low or if you see English pages indexed in the French market, fix your hreflang or canonical tags immediately.
Optimize Collection and Product Pages for Local Search Intent
Product detail pages and collection pages are transactional-buyers are ready to purchase. But search intent varies by market. A shopper in Germany may search "beste Winterstiefel" (best winter boots) before clicking a product page. A shopper in Canada may search "winter boots size 10." You need to optimize your collection pages and product pages for these local search variants.
On each collection page, write a meta description (160 characters) that includes the local keyword variant and a call to action. For a German store, the collection page for winter boots might be: "Entdecken Sie unsere Top-bewerteten Winterstiefel für Damen und Herren. Schnell versandfrei ab 50 EUR. Jetzt einkaufen." (Discover our top-rated winter boots for women and men. Free shipping from 50 EUR. Shop now.) This micro-copy increases click-through rate from the search results page by 8 to 15% when it matches local search intent.
Product pages should include structured content blocks: specifications (size, weight, material), customer reviews (with star ratings and local language reviews), and a FAQ section addressing common objections. A FAQ block answers "Is this waterproof?" or "What is the return policy in France?" in the local language. This content helps with both search rankings and conversion.
Add 100 to 300 words of original content to each product page. Don't rely solely on manufacturer descriptions. Write a paragraph about why this product is ideal for the local climate or use case. For a winter boot product page on yourstore.com/de/, explain why these boots work well for Alpine hiking and cold German winters. This originality signals to search engines that you've invested in local relevance.
Build Your International XML Sitemap and Monitor Crawl Budget
An XML sitemap is a file that lists all your pages for search engines. It's especially critical for international stores because Shopify generates separate sitemaps for each language and market, and you need to ensure they're all submitted to Google Search Console and indexed correctly.
Shopify automatically creates sitemaps for each market at yourstore.com/sitemap.xml. If you have subfolders (yourstore.com/fr/, yourstore.com/de/), Shopify generates yourstore.com/fr/sitemap.xml and yourstore.com/de/sitemap.xml as separate files. Add each sitemap to Google Search Console for the relevant market or language. This tells Google, "Here are all the pages I want indexed in France, Germany, Japan," and so on.
Crawl budget is the number of pages Google crawls on your site per day. International stores with multiple language versions consume crawl budget faster. If you have 500 products in English, 500 in French, and 500 in German, Google has to crawl 1,500 product pages instead of 500. To conserve crawl budget, exclude low-value pages from your sitemap: test pages, admin pages, duplicate filter results. In Shopify, use robots.txt to disallow Disallow: /admin/ and Disallow: /cart to prevent Google from wasting crawl budget on non-ranking pages.
Monitor crawl stats in Google Search Console. Review the "Coverage" report monthly. If you see a spike in "Excluded" pages or a drop in "Valid" pages, investigate. A misconfigured robots.txt or a broken hreflang tag can cause sitemaps to fall out of index.
Leverage Programmatic SEO and Generative Engine Optimization for Scale
As you expand into more markets and languages, manual content creation becomes unsustainable. Programmatic SEO uses automation to generate keyword clusters, create content templates, and build internal linking at scale. Tools like the shopify seo software automate this workflow by finding high-intent keywords in each market, writing optimized blog posts, and linking them back to your product and collection pages.
Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) accounts for how large language models and AI search systems (like Google's Search Generative Experience) rank and display results. These systems favor content that answers questions comprehensively and cites authority. A blog post about "best winter boots for cold climates" should answer follow-up questions a searcher might ask-"What materials keep feet warmest?" "Are wool liners better than synthetic?"-and link to authoritative sources. This retrieval-augmented generation approach improves your chances of appearing in AI Overviews, which now show on approximately 16% of search queries.

Build content clusters using a human-in-the-loop workflow: automation identifies the keywords and creates a draft outline, a human editor refines the content, and internal linking is added programmatically. This cuts content production time by 60% while maintaining quality and relevance across 5 to 15 markets.
Monitor Performance with Google Search Console and Core Web Vitals
International SEO success requires data. Set up a separate Google Search Console property for each market or language if you're using ccTLDs or subdomains. If you're using subfolders (the recommended approach), you can use a single property and filter by language in the settings.
Track these metrics monthly:
Organic impressions by market (Search Console > Performance > Countries). A healthy international store sees impressions grow 5 to 10% month-over-month in established markets.
Click-through rate (CTR) by market and query. If CTR drops below 2% on a high-traffic keyword, your title tag or meta description may not match local search intent.
Average position by country. Keywords ranking in positions 4 to 8 are conversion opportunities-optimize those pages to move into the top 3.
Core Web Vitals by market. Google prioritizes fast, mobile-optimized pages. A page with poor Core Web Vitals (slow loading, layout shift) will rank lower than a competitor's equivalent page that loads in under 2.5 seconds.
Test Core Web Vitals locally for each market using PageSpeed Insights (pagespeed.web.dev). A page that loads fast in North America may load slower in Southeast Asia due to server location. Consider using a content delivery network (CDN) to serve images and static assets from servers close to each market.

What is the difference between international SEO and localization on Shopify?
International SEO optimizes your store to rank in search engines across multiple countries and languages. Localization goes deeper: it adapts your product descriptions, pricing, currency, shipping costs, and even product assortment to each market's local preferences and regulations. For example, international SEO gets a German buyer to your German store page; localization ensures the page shows prices in EUR, displays German customer reviews, and mentions German return policies. Both are necessary for a successful multi-market store.
Should I use subfolders, subdomains, or country-code domains for international SEO on Shopify?
Subfolders (yourstore.com/fr/) are the best choice for most stores. They share domain authority with your primary domain, are easiest to set up, and Shopify's Markets feature automates hreflang tags. Use subdomains (fr.yourstore.com) if you need operational separation between markets. Use ccTLDs (yourstore.fr) only if you're investing heavily in one specific country and want the strongest local signal. Shopify supports all three, but subfolders require the least maintenance and rank fastest because they inherit your primary domain's topical authority.
How do I avoid duplicate content penalties with hreflang tags?
Hreflang tags tell Google that multiple language versions of the same content are intentional, not duplicates. Each page must declare all its language variants in the HTML head. For a product sold in English, French, and German, the English page links to all three versions (including itself), the French page does the same, and the German page does the same. Shopify's Markets feature automates this if you use subfolders. If you use custom domains or subdomains, manually verify hreflang in Search Console's URL Inspection tool or use the Rich Results Test to check syntax.
Which keywords should I target for each market in international SEO?
Research keywords using tools like Semrush or Ahrefs filtered by language and country. Don't assume English keywords translate directly. A "sports watch" in the US market may be called a "fitness tracker" in the UK and a "montre de sport" in France. Each market has its own search volume, difficulty, and intent. Aim for 15 to 25 high-intent keywords per market, group them into 3 to 5 semantic clusters, and create pillar pages and blog content around each cluster. Monitor search volume and difficulty quarterly because seasonal trends and competitor activity shift keyword value.
How do I optimize product pages for local search intent?
Write meta titles and descriptions in the local language that match how people in that market search. Include a local keyword variant, the product benefit, and a call to action. Example for a German product page: "Winterstiefel wasserdicht | Damen & Herren | Kostenlos über 50EUR | Online kaufen" (Waterproof winter boots | Women & Men | Free shipping over 50EUR | Buy online). Add original content (100 to 300 words) that explains why this product suits the local climate or use case. Include a FAQ section answering common local questions about sizing, returns, or warranty.
What role does structured data play in international SEO on Shopify?
Structured data (schema markup in JSON-LD) tells search engines what you're selling, the price in local currency, availability, and ratings. Shopify adds basic product schema automatically, but you should audit it using Google's Rich Results Test to ensure currency codes and language tags are correct for each market. Rich results (stars, price, availability snippets) appear in search results and increase click-through rate by 20 to 40%. Correct schema also helps AI search systems understand your products, improving your visibility in AI Overviews and conversational search results.
How often should I audit hreflang tags and canonical URLs?
Audit quarterly or whenever you launch a new market or redesign your site. Use Google Search Console's URL Inspection tool to check live pages. Search for site:yourstore.com/fr/ to verify that the correct language version is indexed in each market. A misconfigured canonical tag (pointing all versions to English, for example) or missing hreflang will fragment your rankings and cause the wrong language version to rank in search results. Fix errors immediately because they directly cost organic impressions and sales.
Can I use the same content across multiple markets if I translate it?
Machine translation alone is not sufficient for international SEO. Translated content without local market research and keyword optimization will rank poorly because it doesn't match local search intent. You must research local keywords, adapt content to local culture and climate, and have a native speaker review for natural tone. For example, a blog post about "winter boots" should address the specific climate challenges of Canada, Germany, or Japan rather than using generic, translated text. Invest in native-language content creation or human-reviewed localization to compete effectively in each market.
