How to find high traffic keywords with low competition
·10 min read
Finding keywords that attract real search volume without drowning you in competition is the core challenge of ecommerce SEO. Most store owners chase the same high-difficulty terms everyone else targets. Instead, the fastest path to organic traffic is identifying search terms with genuine buyer intent and minimal competing content.
This guide covers the concrete tactics to locate these opportunities and turn them into ranking content.
What keyword difficulty actually measures
Keyword difficulty (KD) is a score estimating how hard it would be for a new domain to rank on page one of Google. Most tools use a scale from 0 to 100, where 0 means almost nobody is targeting the term and 100 means the biggest brands in the world dominate it.
High traffic keywords with low competition typically sit in the 10 to 30 KD range. A 2025 analysis of 50,000 small ecommerce sites showed that 62% of their first-page rankings came from keywords with KD scores below 35. That's because established competitors have already staked their SEO budgets on the obvious, high-volume terms. The space between "too easy to ignore" and "too hard to rank" is where you capture traffic before the giants arrive.
The metrics behind keyword difficulty include domain authority of current top-ranking sites, the presence of high-value SERP features like product carousels or knowledge panels, and backlink profiles of competing pages. When Semrush or Ahrefs report a KD of 25, they're weighing all three factors. A term with KD 25 means a site with domain rating around 20 to 35 has realistic chances of ranking within 3 to 6 months of consistent content and basic internal linking.
The trap many ecommerce teams fall into is treating keyword difficulty as static. It shifts monthly as new content enters the index and old pages lose topical authority. Recheck your target keywords every quarter to spot when difficulty rises above your capacity to compete.
How search intent shapes competition
A keyword's traffic potential depends equally on search intent. High traffic keywords with low competition exist at the intersection of informational intent, transactional signals, and niche specificity.
Consider the difference between "winter boots" and "vegan insulated winter boots under 200 dollars." The first has massive search volume (18,100 searches per month) but KD of 72 because Amazon, Zappos, and DSW all own the top spots. The second has 320 monthly searches and KD of 12. Both send qualified traffic, but the second one is achievable for a 2-year-old store.
Search intent also reveals competition density in unexpected ways. Informational queries like "how to choose hiking boots" often have lower KD than transactional queries like "buy hiking boots online" because major retailers focus on product pages, not guides. If your store publishes a 3,500-word buying guide optimized for semantic hub architecture and internal linking, you capture the informational traffic before visitors ever land on a product detail page.
Transaction intent queries at the bottom of the funnel (collection pages and product category searches) usually carry higher KD because retailers invest heavily there. Pairing product pages with topical authority on the informational side creates a content cluster that ranks faster and converts higher than competing on transactional terms alone.
Three methods to uncover these keywords
Method 1: Start with People Also Ask
Google's People Also Ask (PAA) section surfaces real questions buyers are asking. These questions usually have lower keyword difficulty because they target specific, long-tail language rather than broad commercial terms. Open any general keyword in Google, scroll to PAA, and expand each question. You'll find specific pain points and buying criteria almost no competitor has written about.
For a Shopify store selling specialty coffee, you might search "best coffee for espresso" and find PAA questions like "what altitude grows the best espresso beans" or "can you use light roast for espresso." Each of these micro-queries has 60 to 400 monthly searches and KD under 20. Keyword clustering these questions together into a semantic hub lets you build topical authority cheaply.
Method 2: Use the ecommerce keyword research tool for competitive gaps
An ecommerce keyword research tool mines real search demand from your product catalog and competitor sites, then scores each keyword by both search volume and difficulty. The advantage over general keyword tools is that ecommerce-focused software understands product detail page queries, collection page modifiers, and buying signal language specific to your vertical.
Run your top 20 competitor URLs through the tool to see which keywords they rank for but haven't built content around. These ranking keywords with low internal link volume often have low keyword difficulty because competitors treated them as accidental wins rather than strategic targets. That's your opening.
Method 3: Layer Shopify API data with keyword metrics
For Shopify merchants, pull product tags and collection names through the Shopify REST API and cross-reference them with keyword research data. Your product titles and tags already reflect how customers describe what you sell. When you see a tag like "durable canvas laptop bag" appearing on 40 products but ranking for only 2 keywords, that's a gap. Create a collection page with a topical mapping strategy and internal linking targeting that exact modifier, and you'll often rank within 4 to 8 weeks.
This approach works because your product catalog is already customer-validated language. You're not guessing what buyers search for; you're observing what they've already named the thing they want.
How to validate traffic potential before you write
Once you've identified candidate keywords, validate them in three stages before committing content resources.
Stage 1: Confirm search volume with multiple tools. One tool showing 1,200 monthly searches is noise; two tools showing 1,100 and 1,350 is a signal. Ahrefs, Semrush, and Moz often diverge by 15 to 25% because they use different data sources. If all three show the same ballpark (within 20%), the traffic is real.
Stage 2: Spot check the top 10 rankings. Open Google and search the keyword yourself. Count how many results are from ecommerce sites versus blogs, directories, or YouTube. If 7 of the top 10 are ecommerce product pages from established brands, keyword difficulty might be accurate but your domain rating might still be too low to rank. If 4 to 6 of the top 10 are independent shops, blogs, or guides, you have room to break through.
Stage 3: Check for SERP features. Zero-click searches powered by featured snippets, knowledge panels, or AI Overviews eat into organic click-through rates. A keyword with 5,000 monthly searches but 70% zero-click rate delivers only 1,500 potential clicks to your site. A keyword with 800 monthly searches but 20% zero-click rate delivers 640 clicks. The second is more efficient.
Inspect the URL list in the top 10. If you see the same domain appearing 4+ times, topical authority is driving results and you'll need strong semantic clustering, schema markup via JSON-LD, and careful anchor text strategy to compete.
Building content around these keywords
Once you've validated a keyword, content structure determines ranking speed. High traffic keywords with low competition rank faster when supporting content is organized around topical authority rather than scattered across isolated pages.
Create a semantic hub structure. Your pillar page targets the broad keyword with 800+ monthly searches and KD under 40. Cluster pages target related subtopics (each 200 to 600 searches, KD under 25). Link from cluster pages back to the pillar using relevant anchor text, and from the pillar to each cluster using specific modifiers.
For a WooCommerce store selling camping gear, the pillar might target "best three-season tent" with internal links from cluster pages covering "three-season tent for backpacking," "best three-season tent for couples," and "ultralight three-season tent." Each cluster page sits on a collection page or a detailed buying guide. Your XML sitemap and canonical tag structure reinforce this relationship.
Programmatic SEO works here at scale. If your store sells 200 product variants, use bulk generation combined with human-in-the-loop review to create collection page descriptions and category guides for keyword clusters you've already validated. This approach captures 10 to 15 times more organic impressions than manually writing 5 to 10 pages per quarter.
Use structured data to help search engines understand your content hierarchy. Implement schema markup for product detail pages, aggregate reviews, and BreadcrumbList navigation. This signals to Google that you've organized your site intentionally around topical themes, which improves crawl budget efficiency and click-through rate on SERPs.
When keyword difficulty rises
Monitor your target keywords monthly. When a keyword you rank #7 for suddenly climbs to KD 45 (up from 35), new competitors have entered the space. You have two options: double down with additional topical authority and internal linking to defend your position, or shift resources to adjacent keywords where difficulty remains low.
The best ecommerce teams build a rolling 12-month keyword roadmap. Q1 focuses on KD 10 to 20 keywords (fast wins). Q2 targets KD 20 to 35 (medium effort). Q3 and Q4 expand into KD 35 to 50 as domain rating grows. By the time you're a year in, your domain rating has climbed 5 to 15 points and your definition of "low competition" shifts upward.
Track organic impressions and click-through rate alongside keyword difficulty. A KD 25 keyword that generates 200 monthly clicks and converts at 3% is worth more than a KD 15 keyword that generates 40 monthly clicks and converts at 1%. The goal isn't the lowest difficulty; it's the highest revenue per content hour invested.
FAQ ecommerce keyword research tool
What is the difference between keyword difficulty and search volume?
Search volume measures how many times people search for a keyword each month. Keyword difficulty estimates how hard it is to rank for that term based on the strength of existing competitors. A keyword can have high search volume and high difficulty (competitive but valuable), high volume and low difficulty (rare and valuable), low volume and low difficulty (easy but small audience), or low volume and high difficulty (avoid). For ecommerce, the sweet spot is high search volume paired with low to moderate difficulty.
How do I find long-tail keywords with lower competition?
Long-tail keywords are 3 to 5-word phrases that target specific buyer needs. They typically have 100 to 1,000 monthly searches and KD scores 20 to 40 points lower than their parent keyword. Use Google's autocomplete feature, People Also Ask sections, and customer support tickets to identify real language buyers use. Competitor gap analysis and your own product tags reveal long-tail variations your site should target. Long-tail keywords convert higher because they match specific intent.
Can I rank for high traffic keywords with low competition quickly?
Ranking speed depends on domain authority, backlink profile, and content quality. A site with domain rating 25 can typically rank a low-difficulty keyword (KD below 25) within 8 to 12 weeks of publishing optimized content. A brand-new store might take 16 to 24 weeks for the same keyword. Faster ranking comes from strong Core Web Vitals, strategic internal linking, and topical authority signals via schema markup. Low competition doesn't mean instant ranking; it means realistic ranking for younger domains.
Should I focus on low-competition keywords if my site is already established?
Established sites with high domain authority should still monitor keyword difficulty, but their definition of "low competition" shifts upward. A 10-year-old store with domain rating 50+ can realistically compete for keywords with KD 50 to 70. However, low-difficulty keywords still offer faster ranking times (4 to 8 weeks versus 12 to 16 weeks) and lower content investment. Use them to expand into adjacent product categories or to build topical authority quickly in new market segments.
How does AI Overview impact keyword selection for ecommerce?
AI Overviews synthesize information from top-ranking pages and display it directly in Google search results, reducing click-through rates for informational queries. Keywords that trigger AI Overviews but lack rich snippets or product carousels see 30 to 50% lower organic click volume. Ecommerce teams should prioritize keywords with SERP features (product carousels, reviews, prices) over pure informational queries. Schema markup and structured data help your products appear in AI Overviews and traditional SERP features, offsetting the zero-click impact.
What tools are best for finding high traffic keywords with low competition?
Semrush, Ahrefs, and Moz are industry standards with keyword difficulty metrics. SEMrush's Personal Keyword Difficulty accounts for your specific domain rating, making recommendations more realistic. An ecommerce keyword research tool adds ecommerce-specific features like Shopify API integration and product-level keyword mining. For a broader overview of keyword research strategies and platform comparisons, see our guide to ecommerce keyword research tool.
How often should I update my keyword strategy?
Refresh keyword research quarterly. Monitor changes in keyword difficulty, search volume, and SERP features every 30 days for your top 50 keywords. Quarterly reviews let you spot emerging competitor content, new SERP features, and shifts in buyer language. Use programmatic SEO and bulk generation to scale your content production as you identify new keyword clusters. This cadence keeps your topical authority strong without constant manual effort.
Can low-competition keywords rank even with weak backlinks?
Yes, but with limits. A keyword with KD 15 can rank for a page with 2 to 5 backlinks from authoritative sites. A keyword with KD 35 requires 10 to 30 backlinks. Internal linking partially compensates for weak external backlinks by signaling topical relevance via semantic clustering and anchor text strategy. However, a page with zero backlinks faces a KD ceiling around 20 to 25 regardless of content quality. Prioritize earning 5 to 10 strong backlinks through outreach and content promotion for your high-value keywords.
