Finding high search low competition keywords is the fastest way to start ranking in ecommerce search results. These are search terms with real monthly search volume but minimal SEO competition from established sites, letting you compete without massive domain authority. The right keyword research strategy combines search intent analysis, difficulty scoring, and realistic ranking timelines for your store.
Understanding keyword difficulty and search volume
Keyword difficulty and search volume are the two metrics that determine whether a term is worth targeting. Search volume tells you how many people search for a term monthly. Keyword difficulty measures how hard it is to rank based on competing pages and their domain authority.
You need both data points. A keyword with 320 monthly searches and a difficulty score of 14 is far more valuable than a term with 2,100 searches and difficulty of 62. The best opportunities sit between 100 and 500 monthly searches with a difficulty below 20.
Here is a concrete example. If your Shopify store targets "organic cotton baby clothing," you find 320 monthly searches with a KD score of 14. Your store launched 8 months ago with 12 backlinks from local press mentions. You create a product collection page optimized for this term, add internal links from related blog posts on "sustainable baby wear," and expect rankings to move from position 22 to position 8 within 6 to 8 weeks.
By contrast, a keyword with 2,100 monthly searches and a difficulty of 62 requires 6 to 12 months of effort and stronger domain authority. Align your domain age, authority, and target difficulty. If your store launched less than 6 months ago, target keywords with difficulty below 15. After one year with backlinks and brand citations, you can target difficulty scores up to 30.
Identifying search intent and organizing your keyword list
Search intent determines whether someone is ready to buy or still researching. A transactional query like "best affordable running shoes under $100" signals purchase readiness. An informational query like "how to find the right running shoe fit" shows research mode. For ecommerce stores, targeting transactional and commercial intent keywords drives faster conversions.
When filtering your keyword list, examine the top 5 ranking pages for each candidate. If results show product detail pages and collection pages, the intent is transactional and safe to target. If the top 10 results are all blog articles and how-to guides, the keyword has informational intent. You may need to create a blog post rather than a product page to compete.
How to find high search low competition keywords · EcomRank
Use an ecommerce keyword research tool to compare your store's topical authority against the current ranking pages. This helps you avoid wasted effort on terms where your store has no semantic relevance. If you sell outdoor camping gear but have no content on water filtration, targeting "portable water filters for hiking" will be harder than starting with "lightweight tent setup tips" where you already own the topic.
Pay attention to SERP features as well. Keywords that trigger zero-click searches (answer boxes, featured snippets, People Also Ask sections) may send less traffic even if you rank first. Look for terms with 5 to 8 organic results visible above the fold, which suggests lower zero-click saturation.
Organize your findings into actionable tiers. Tier 1 quick wins contain 100 to 300 monthly searches and difficulty below 15, typically ranking within 4 to 8 weeks. Tier 2 steady targets cover 300 to 800 monthly searches and difficulty 15 to 25, expecting 8 to 16 weeks. Tier 3 future growth includes 800 to 2,000 searches and difficulty 25 to 35, targeting 4 to 6 month campaigns.
Building your keyword list with topical clustering and internal linking
Effective keyword research groups terms into clusters based on search volume and difficulty. Start by identifying 5 to 10 seed keywords related to your core products, then expand into variations and long-tail modifiers. A store selling organic skincare might start with "organic face cream," "natural moisturizer," and "best face serum for sensitive skin."
Generate a full keyword list from those seeds. Aim for at least 50 to 100 unique keywords across your product categories. Apply these filters: search volume between 50 and 1,000 monthly searches, keyword difficulty below 25, and transactional or commercial search intent.
A 6-month keyword roadmap typically includes 15 to 20 Tier 1 keywords, 12 to 18 Tier 2 keywords, and 8 to 12 Tier 3 keywords. This balance ensures fast wins early while building topical authority for harder targets later. Batch your content production and internal linking strategy around keyword clusters rather than chasing 50 terms scattered across all tiers.
Topical mapping turns your list into a content strategy. Instead of writing isolated articles, you create a semantic hub around a main topic with supporting content that links back internally. This signals topical authority to Google and improves your chances of ranking for all related terms.
If your low competition keyword is "vegan leather bag brands," your semantic hub might include linked articles on "sustainable fashion materials," "how to spot fake vegan leather," and "certified vegan fashion retailers." The hub page targets the primary term, while supporting pages target related variations. Your internal linking strategy uses anchor text like "vegan leather materials" and "ethical fashion brands" to reinforce topical relevance.
Optimizing for Google Search and AI Overviews
Generative Engine Optimization and AI Overviews now require this clustering approach. These systems rely on retrieval-augmented generation to pull information from multiple pages on your site. When your content is tightly clustered with consistent internal linking and schema markup, AI Overviews are more likely to cite your pages. Isolated articles with weak internal linking rarely appear in AI search results.
Use JSON-LD structured data to explicitly define your topical relationships. A product detail page targeting "organic cotton t-shirt" should include BreadcrumbList schema marking its position in your site structure and FAQPage schema if it answers common questions. This structured data helps both Google and language models understand your topical authority and content organization.
Core Web Vitals remain a ranking factor for all pages in your strategy. Monitor your page load time and interaction responsiveness on product detail pages and collection pages. A slow product page ranks lower than a faster competitor even if your content is superior. Aim for Largest Contentful Paint under 2.5 seconds and Cumulative Layout Shift below 0.1.
Set up monitoring in Google Search Console to track organic impressions, click-through rate, and average position for each keyword. A healthy trend shows impressions growing from 20 per month in week 2 to 80 by week 8, with position improving from 15 to 8. If impressions plateau or decline after 12 weeks, add internal links from higher-authority pages or refresh the article with updated data.
Watch for keywords that rank but have low click-through rates. A keyword at position 5 but receiving only 1 to 2 clicks per month often means your title tag or meta description misses search intent. Rewrite the title to highlight the benefit, not just the keyword, and your click-through rate usually improves by 30 to 50 percent. FAQ ecommerce keyword research tool
What is the difference between keyword difficulty and search volume?
Keyword difficulty measures how hard it is for your site to rank for a term based on domain authority and backlinks of the top 10 results. Search volume shows how many people search for that term monthly. A keyword can have high volume with high difficulty (harder to rank, bigger opportunity), low volume with low difficulty (easier to rank, smaller audience), or any combination. You need both metrics to make smart decisions. Target keywords where your domain authority aligns with the difficulty score and where monthly search volume justifies the effort.
How many monthly searches makes a keyword worth targeting?
For a new ecommerce store under 6 months old, target keywords with at least 50 monthly searches. Below that, traffic is negligible. For an established store with 2+ years of content and backlinks, 20 monthly searches can be worth it because you have authority. Most stores find the sweet spot between 100 and 500 monthly searches per keyword. These terms are specific enough to have low competition but large enough to drive meaningful traffic.
What search intent matters most for ecommerce stores?
Transactional intent (buy now) and commercial intent (comparing products before buying) matter most. These queries show someone is ready to spend money. Informational intent queries are useful for building topical authority and capturing long-tail variations, but rarely convert directly. A balanced keyword strategy includes 60 percent transactional and commercial terms, 40 percent informational terms that support your topical hub.
How long does it take to rank for a low competition keyword?
Most low competition keywords with difficulty below 20 rank on Google's first page within 4 to 12 weeks if your on-page optimization is solid and you have at least one internal link from a higher-authority page. The timeline depends on your domain age, existing backlinks, and competition intensity. A 2-year-old store with 20 backlinks ranks faster than a brand-new store with none. Exceptionally low difficulty below 10 can rank in 2 to 3 weeks.
Should I target many keywords or focus on a few?
Create a focused list of 15 to 30 keywords in your first 3 months and rank them consistently. Publishing content for 50 scattered keywords at once spreads your effort too thin and prevents you from building topical authority. After your first round ranks, add another 20 to 30 keywords in a new cluster. This batch approach lets you dominate categories progressively rather than competing everywhere weakly.
How do I avoid high competition keywords by mistake?
Check the top 5 results before committing to any keyword. If 3 or more of the top 5 results are from Amazon, Etsy, or major brand sites, the keyword is competitive and hard to rank for as a small store. If the top 5 are a mix of independent blogs and niche retailers, the competition is realistic. Also check the domain rating of the top 3 results. If all three have domain ratings above 45, the keyword is harder to crack than a keyword where the top results have domain ratings of 20 to 35.
Can I rank for the same keyword on both a blog post and a product page?
Avoid it. Google typically shows only one URL per domain in a single search result. If you have two pages targeting the same keyword, they compete with each other and dilute your ranking potential. Instead, use internal linking to funnel all link authority to your strongest page for that keyword. For example, link from your blog post about best running shoes to your product collection page for running shoes.
What role does topical authority play in ranking low competition keywords?
Topical authority amplifies your ability to rank. A site with 30 articles on organic skincare will rank faster and higher for organic face cream than a general beauty site with scattered content. Search engines trust sites with proven depth on a topic. Focus 60 percent of your content efforts on your core 2 to 3 product categories rather than spreading across 10 categories. Deep topical authority beats breadth every time.
